And not just x-rays, I also love ultrasound images. Modern imaging of the body is like a secret window into our bodies. It’s fast, easy, and painless. For someone like me who is trying to figure out a problem with a body part such as the foot, we can look at the surface of the foot, we can feel the foot and we can move the foot around. We can even watch the foot function when you walk — but often the problem is hidden beneath the skin. We can guess at the problem but it’s so much better to use x-rays or ultrasound to see the problem!
When you have an x-ray taken at my office I always show you the x-ray. I review the x-ray with you and have an example x-ray of a perfect foot to compare and contrast. That way you can see as I do the difference between your foot and a perfect foot. You can see the problem with your foot and equally important you can see the reason for the problem.
The love of imaging has proven an expensive attraction. I purchased one of the first diagnostic ultrasound machines. I now have a high-end color ultrasound. Our office is the only office I know of that has two mini C-arms. A mini C-arm is a video x-ray that allows you to look at things from nonstandard angles. It is my favorite tool in my podiatry office bar none. This tool is made the biggest difference in the way I practice. Using the mini C-arm I have seen hairline fractures and stress fractures before they have been visible on traditional static x-rays. We can see foreign bodies and remove them in the office. We can do toe office surgeries through tiny incisions in the office with minimal recovery and at tremendous cost savings.

I’ve been fascinated by x-rays of feet since I was in podiatry school. In fact I won the first-place award for radiology research at graduation.
What could be more exciting than a tool that allows you to see inside and fix the body?
